Additive Presuppositions Are Derived Through Activating Focus Alternatives

چکیده

The additive presupposition of particles like too/even is uncontested, but usually stipulated. This paper proposes to derive it based on two properties. (i) too/even is cross-linguistically focus-sensitive, and (ii) in many languages, too/even builds negative polarity items and freechoice items as well, often in concert with other particles. (i) is the source of its existential presupposition, and (ii) offers clues regarding how additivity comes about. (i)-(ii) together demand a sparse semantics for too/even, one that can work with different kinds of alternatives (focus, subdomain, scalar) and invoke suitably different further operators.

Presupposition Triggering from Alternatives

This paper considers a set of presupposition triggers including focus, questions, ‘contrastive’ statives, and an ‘affirmation/negation’ construction involving and not, where presuppositions are cancelable. It is proposed that these constructions, rather than having strict semantic presuppositions, have representations involving alternative sets in the sense of alternative semantics of questions...

The emergence of scalar meanings

This paper analyzes the emergence of scalar additive meanings. We show that in Basque the same particle ere can obtain both the "simple additive" reading (akin to English too) and the "scalar additive" reading (akin to English even) but we argue that we do not have to distinguish two types of ere. We provide evidence, by means of a production and a perception experiment, that the reading is dis...

On the Conversational Basis of Some Presuppositions

0. Introduction The current literature on presupposition focuses almost exclusively on the projection problem: the question of how and why the presuppositions of atomic clauses are projected to complex sentences which embed them. Very little attention has been paid to the question of how and why these presuppositions arise at all. As Kay (1992, p.335) observes, " treatments of the presuppositio...

Flexible Workflow Execution through an Ontology-based Approach

Workflow execution is many times stopped or cancelled due to unavailability of resources or lack of information. However, recent workflow applications usually require more relaxed execution. To flexibilize workflow execution, two mechanisms are proposed in this paper: a mechanism to handle presuppositions, which allows execution to proceed in the presence of incomplete information, by adopting ...

Sensitivity Analysis of Simple Additive Weighting Method (SAW): The Results of Change in the Weight of One Attribute on the Final Ranking of Alternatives

Most of data in a multi-attribute decision making (MADM) problem are unstable and changeable, then sensitivity analysis after problem solving can effectively contribute to making accurate decisions. This paper provides a new method for sensitivity analysis of MADM problems so that by using it and changing the weights of attributes, one can determine changes in the final results of a decision ma...
